Shela at a glance

Shela lies on the south-east of Lamu Island, roughly 3 km from Lamu Town. It is a smaller village than the old town, with narrow lanes and a long beach nearby. Many visitors base themselves here for the beach and go to Lamu Town for the sights.

Shela and the old town are different places. The UNESCO listing covers Lamu Old Town and names the Shela dunes as part of its surroundings, but it does not make every beach on the island a World Heritage Site. For the museum, the fort and the lanes, see the Lamu Old Town page.

Shela beach

A hotel on the island describes the sandy beach between Kizingoni and Shela as roughly 12 km long. That is an operator's figure, not a measured one, but it gives a sense of scale: the beach is wide and long, and most of it is quiet.

Swimming needs care. The Peponi hotel warns of strong currents in front of the hotel during spring tides. Ask your hotel about the tide and the current on the day, swim near other people and do not plan on a lifeguard being on duty. Do not leave children unwatched at the water's edge.

Beachwear is fine on the sand, but cover up when you walk back into the village. The same rule applies as in the old town: Shela is a Muslim community. Ask before you photograph people.

The dunes

A protected landscape behind the village.

UNESCO names the Shela dunes as part of the surroundings of the old town and as a source of freshwater. It also warns that building on the dunes threatens the heritage. Treat the dunes as a protected area. Do not drive or ride vehicles over them, keep to existing paths and stay off private plots.

Ask locally about any fee or access rule for the beach and the dunes. Rules on private land can apply, so if a path leads through a fenced property, turn back.

Village, mosque and landmarks

What to look at and what to leave alone.

The village lanes

Shela has narrow lanes. Donkeys carry loads here as well, so step aside when one passes. Walk slowly and look at the doorways from outside.

Shela Mosque

The Zamani Project documented the Shela Mosque in 2006, so the building is well recorded. That does not say that visitors may go in. Admire it from the lane and ask locally before you approach.

Peponi, a place to orient yourself

Peponi is a hotel in Shela that opened in 1967, according to its own history. For many visitors it is a landmark on the shore. Staying there is one option, listed with its 2026 rates on the where to stay page.

Sunsets and the water

Boats lie at anchor off the village. Sunset trips by dhow are one of the common ways to spend an evening. See the dhow trips page for what to ask before you board.

Getting to Shela and when to go

Boats, taxis, winds and tides.

You reach Shela by boat from the airport on Manda Island or from Lamu Town. Boat times and prices are agreed locally, so settle the price with the skipper before you start. Many hotels organise the transfer for their guests: one Shela hotel includes the airport boat in its 2026 room rate. Ask your hotel about the route, the tide and late arrivals. Read the getting there page for flights and boats.

The winds shape the season. A local hotel describes the south-east wind (Kusi), roughly from May to October, as windier, with rougher and murkier water, and the north-east wind (Kaskazi), roughly from November to April, as the time of clearer water. The change between the two does not fall on a fixed day. The weather page has the rainy months.

For a day plan, combine a morning walk through the old town with the afternoon on the beach.
