Lamu Cultural Festival and Maulidi: two events, two sets of dates
The Lamu Cultural Festival is a public programme of races, games, poetry and music. Maulidi is a religious celebration of the Prophet's birthday, centred on the Riyadha Mosque. They have different organisers and different dates, and they are easy to confuse.
For 2026, two event listings give different dates for the Cultural Festival, and one of them marks its dates as to be confirmed. Maulidi 2026 is known from a press report. Treat all three dates below as reported, not as announced by an organiser, and ask your hotel or a local contact before you plan travel around them.

Lamu Cultural Festival: what the listings say
Two public listings for 2026, side by side.
| Listing | Dates 2026 | Hours | Entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discover Pwani events page | Starts 26 November, described as a three-day festival | 9:00–22:00 | Free |
| FestFinda event page | 30 November to 2 December, marked TBC | – | – |
The programme named in the listings includes dhow and donkey races, bao (the Swahili board game), Swahili poetry, music and henna. No confirmed day-by-day schedule or venue list for the individual contests is published in these listings. Free entry is the listing's wording, so check it again closer to the date.
If you watch the donkey races, look at how the animals are handled. Donkeys are working animals on Lamu, and a race is not a reason to push one past what it can do.

Maulidi in Lamu
The Prophet's birthday, celebrated over several days.
A press report of 2 September 2026 gives the local Maulidi window as 8 to 11 September 2026, organised by the Riyadha Mosque. The weekdays given, Tuesday to Friday, fit those dates. The report describes busy trade in town during the event. Rooms and boats are likely to be in demand, so book early if you want to be there.
Do not use a general Islamic calendar date for Lamu. Calendar sites place the Prophet's birthday on 12 Rabi al-Awwal, which they list as 25 August 2026. That is a different date from the local celebration. The Islamic calendar moves about ten days earlier each year, so the 2026 dates will not repeat in 2027. Ask locally for the 2027 dates once they are known.
Maulidi is a religious event first. Visitors are guests. Follow the lead of the people around you.
Festival etiquette
Lamu is a mostly Muslim Swahili town, and festival days are busier and more public than usual.
Dress
Cover shoulders and knees, and choose loose clothing. Operators in Lamu ask visitors to dress modestly in town and in villages. The British government asks for conservative dress on the mostly Muslim coast outside resorts and hotels, especially at religious sites.
Photographs
Ask before you photograph people, and accept a no. Do not photograph women, children or worshippers without clear consent. Do not film prayer.
Mosques and prayer areas
Do not assume you may enter a mosque or stand in a prayer area, and do not assume non-Muslim visitors are welcome inside. Watch from the edge of a crowd unless someone invites you in.
Ramadan
If your trip falls in Ramadan, expect changed opening hours and quieter days. Avoid eating, drinking or smoking openly in the street in daylight.
Crowds and alleys
The old town has narrow lanes with donkeys and no room to spare. Keep your bag in front of you, give way to loaded donkeys and keep to the side during processions.
Planning a festival trip
What to settle before you book.
Get there by air
The British government recommends flying to Lamu Airport on Manda and not travelling by road. The final stretch to Lamu Town is by boat. Details are on the getting there page.
Getting to Lamu →Read the travel advice
Government advice for Lamu differs by country and is updated often. Read the current text for your country before you commit to festival dates.
Is Lamu safe? →Expect rain in late November
The county's development plan lists a short rainy season in November and December. A festival in late November can be wet, so pack for that.

When is the Lamu Cultural Festival in 2026?
One listing gives a start on 26 November 2026 and a three-day programme. Another gives 30 November to 2 December 2026 and marks the dates as to be confirmed. Neither is an organiser announcement, so confirm locally before you book travel.
When is Maulidi in Lamu in 2026?
A press report of 2 September 2026 gives 8 to 11 September 2026, organised by the Riyadha Mosque. The general Islamic calendar date for the Prophet's birthday, 25 August 2026, is a different date and not the Lamu celebration.
Is entry to the festival free?
One listing says entry is free, with events from 9:00 to 22:00. A second listing gives no price. Single contests may have their own rules, so ask on site.
Can non-Muslims watch Maulidi?
Much of the celebration happens in public, but it is a religious event. Do not enter a mosque or prayer area unless you are invited, and ask before you take photographs.
What dates apply in 2027?
Do not assume 2026 dates repeat. The Islamic calendar shifts about ten days earlier each year, and the Cultural Festival dates change from year to year. Ask your hotel or a local contact closer to the time.
