How dhow trips in Lamu work

A dhow is a traditional wooden sailing boat, and dhows are part of daily life on the Lamu channel. Visitors most often take one of four formats: a shared sunset sail, a private sunset sail, an evening charter of a whole boat, or a full-day charter. Snorkelling trips are also run by boat, and island visits to Manda and Takwa use boats too.

The prices below are published offers from single operators in 2026. They show what one product costs and are not a market range. The most common mistake is to compare a per-person price with a per-boat price. Check which one you are looking at before you decide.

Safety on the water

Pick the boat as carefully as the route.

Licensed and insured boats

The Kenya Maritime Authority advises using a licensed, insured boat with a means of communication and enough life jackets. Ask the captain or the operator about the licence before you pay. Do not board a boat without a life jacket for every guest.

Wear the life jacket

The same guidance says to wear a life jacket that fits you during the trip. For children, ask for a size that fits before you leave the shore.

Check the forecast

The national weather service issues a daily marine forecast. Check it before you go. It is one day's forecast, not a clearance to sail.

Respect the sea life

Keep your distance from marine animals and do not touch or disturb them. Do not drop litter or oil into the water. No fixed distance is given in the guidance, so follow the crew's instructions.

A recent accident, put in context

A boat capsized off Lamu East on 23 September 2026. A press report of 27 September described 6 crew rescued and 4 missing, and a cargo run, not a tourist dhow. The figures were the count at the time of reporting. It is still a reason to choose a licensed boat.

Winds, tides and the best season

The monsoon decides how the water feels.

A local hotel describes two wind seasons. Kusi blows from the south-east, roughly from May to October, with rougher and cloudier water and less favourable snorkelling. Kaskazi blows from the north-east, roughly from November to April, and often brings clearer water. The change does not happen on a fixed calendar day.

Tides matter as well. Shallow channels and mangrove creeks can be passable only at high water, so a good captain plans the route around the tide. A sunset sail suits most conditions. A snorkelling day depends more on wind and water clarity, and no operator can promise visibility.

Pate and Kiwayu are not covered by the UK's exclusion for Lamu Island and Manda Island, which names only those two. Read the current advice before you plan a longer trip to them.

What to ask before you book

Five questions that prevent most misunderstandings.

Per person or per boat?

A $250 charter for up to 12 guests works out at about $21 per head with a full boat, against $70 for a place on a shared sail. With two guests it is $125 each. Do the sum for your group.

Where do we meet?

Ask for the exact jetty or hotel beach, and the time the boat leaves. Sunset sails depend on the tide as well as the clock.

What is included?

Look for crew, water, safety equipment, food, snorkel gear, any park fee and transfers. If it is not listed, ask.

What if the weather turns?

Ask whether the trip can be moved or refunded if it is cancelled for wind or rain. Terms differ by operator.

Is alcohol allowed?

Lamu is a conservative Muslim town. Ask the operator what is allowed on board, and keep behaviour discreet near the shore.

Lamu dhow trips: frequently asked questions

How much does a dhow trip in Lamu cost?

Published 2026 examples run from $70 per person for a shared 2-hour sunset sail to $120 per person for a private one. A whole-boat evening charter is listed at $250 and a full-day charter at $850. These are single offers, not a market range.

How long is a sunset sail?

A shared sunset sail lists 2 hours. A hotel charter lists 4:30 to 7 p.m. Check the exact departure time, because it follows the sunset.

Are meals and drinks included?

That differs. The full-day charter names lunch and soft drinks. The shared sunset sail lists crew, water and safety equipment, with meals not included as a rule.

Is it safe to go out on a dhow?

Choose a licensed, insured boat, wear a life jacket, and check the marine forecast. Official travel advice for the area is a separate matter and is on the safety page.

When is the best time to snorkel?

One hotel describes clearer water during the north-east season, roughly November to April, and rougher, cloudier water from roughly May to October. No trip can promise visibility.
