Is Lamu safe? Three governments, three different answers
The UK, Germany and the US all warn about Lamu County, and they do not agree on the islands. The UK exempts Lamu Island and Manda Island from its warning. Germany warns against the county but exempts the same two islands, while still advising against non-essential travel to them. The US lists Lamu County at its highest level with no island exception.
This page does not merge those positions into one rating. Read the current text from your own government before you travel, because the advice changes. The exemption in the British text is not a guarantee of safety, and none of the three treats the other islands, such as Pate and Kiwayu, as exempt.

Travel advice for Lamu compared
Status as published in October 2026.
| Government | Lamu County | Lamu Island and Manda Island | Getting there |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK, updated 16 October 2026 | Advises against all travel, with an explicit island exception | Exempt from the warning, no guarantee of safety | Fly to Lamu Airport, not by road |
| Germany, valid since 19 October 2026 | Travel warning, excluding the two islands | Advises against non-essential travel anyway | If a visit is unavoidable, go by air |
| US, 19 October 2026 | Level 4, Do Not Travel | No island exception in the listing of Lamu County | Do not read the British exception into the US advice |
The US raised its country-wide level for Kenya from 2 to 3 on 19 October 2026 because of health risks. The Lamu rating of Level 4 is separate from that.
Guided tours on Lamu
Old town walks, dhow sails and island trips with licensed operators, with live prices and availability.
What the warnings are about
The risk is not limited to the towns that tourists know by name.
The British text points to terrorist groups in the border area and armed militias in the Boni forest reserve on the mainland. The warning therefore covers the county, not only the places on a holiday map. A reported attack on a village and a paramilitary camp in the Boni area on 25 July 2025 was in that mainland and forest region, not in Lamu Old Town.
The British exception names Lamu Island and Manda Island and nothing else. Pate and Kiwayu are not named as exceptions in the British or German text, so do not treat a trip to them as an extension of a Shela holiday. The Pate Island page and the archipelago page give the island details.
The same British text recommends flying to Lamu Airport and advises against road travel. The German advice adds a guarded convoy and no night driving if a road trip north of Malindi cannot be avoided. See getting to Lamu.
Recent incidents and health notes
No list of events is complete, and silence is not an all clear.
Boat accident, 23 September 2026
The cargo vessel MV Shukrani capsized near Mwambasani Bay and Kizingitini in Lamu East. A report of 27 September 2026 counted 6 crew rescued and 4 missing, figures from that date. Survivors said it was carrying food towards Somalia. It was not a sunset dhow, but it is a reminder to choose licensed boats and wear a life jacket.
Roads and checkpoints
A press report of 27 May 2026 describes a court-suspended night restriction and continuing checkpoints, which residents protested. The report dates from May and does not show whether every checkpoint has since been lifted.
Health: Ebola in Kenya
The British text mentions confirmed Ebola cases in Kenya, with screening, contact tracing and possible quarantine. It does not place a case on Lamu or announce an airport closure. Read the current health section before you fly.
Insurance rule
Kenya has required government travel health insurance for most visitors since 5 October 2026. Ask your own insurer, too, whether your policy applies in an area covered by a government warning.
Practical tips for visitors
Everyday precautions on the islands.
Dress and behaviour
Lamu is a conservative Muslim town. Cover shoulders and knees in town and in villages, and ask before you photograph people. Outside hotels, the British government asks for conservative dress, especially at religious sites. See festivals and etiquette.
On the water
Use a licensed, insured boat with communication equipment and enough life jackets, and wear a fitting jacket during the trip. Keep your distance from marine animals, and keep rubbish and oil out of the water. A hotel in Shela warns of strong currents in front of the hotel at spring tides, so do not treat the beach as risk-free for swimming.
Check the sea forecast
The Kenya Meteorological Department's marine forecast for 21 October 2026 gave morning winds from the south-south-east at 7 to 10 knots and afternoon winds from the south-east at 10 to 13 knots, with waves of about 5 feet and 4 feet. That is one day's forecast, not a norm. See Lamu weather.
Use up-to-date advice
Read the British, German or US text again shortly before you leave. Some hotel pages describe the warnings as affecting only remote mainland areas. That does not match the US listing or the German advice for the islands.
Is Lamu safe? Frequently asked questions
Is Lamu safe to visit in 2026?
That depends on which government you follow. The UK exempts Lamu Island and Manda Island from its warning, Germany advises against non-essential travel to them, and the US rates Lamu County at Level 4. None of them gives a guarantee of safety.
Is Lamu Island exempt from the travel warnings?
In the British and German texts, yes, with different consequences. The UK exempts both Lamu Island and Manda Island. Germany excludes them from its travel warning but advises against non-essential trips. The US listing of Lamu County has no island exception.
Are Pate and Kiwayu covered by the exemption?
No. The British exception names only Lamu Island and Manda Island, and the German exemption does not name Pate either. Kiwayu is not on the British list of exceptions.
Should I travel to Lamu by road?
The British government advises against it and recommends flying to Lamu Airport. Germany advises a guarded convoy and no night driving north of Malindi if the trip cannot be avoided.
What should I check before I go?
Read the current advice for your country, confirm the Kenyan insurance rule, ask your hotel about transfers and book licensed boats. Check again a few days before you travel.
